What is the Young Curators Steering Group?
It’s a paid opportunity for six young people aged 18-30 in Balsall Heath to form a Steering Group. As part of the Steering Group, you will have the chance to discover new and/or respond to already collected stories related to the Baths and Balsall Heath. With support from a mix of our staff team and experts from our wider network you will be provided with the skills, resources and agency to decide how you want to explore each story with your chosen audiences and communities.
Our aim is to ensure that young people are represented and feel ownership of Moseley Road Baths’ and their own future by exploring the past and present.
This is a 6-month commitment in which participants will be paid £1200 for 6 days of work (approx 1 day per month). The group will decide when they work, including when they have skill-based sessions.

At the core of this project is the context of now. Unlike projects that ask young people to figure out what the future will look like, this programme is directly addressing the lack of opportunities for young people to explore what they and their peers want, need and believe is relevant to them here and now.

Budget is available to support the Steering Groups and participants’ access needs, and we will do whatever possible to ensure accessibility. We also recognise that we are a fairly new charitable organisation and currently have a heritage building that is about to undergo the process of restoration and refurbishment which does place some limitations on us, and therefore we recognise this position might not be suitable for everyone. We aim to be upfront and clear about what adjustments we can and cannot make.

What is the Young Curators’ Steering Group?
The Purpose:
Moseley Road Baths is going through restoration and refurbishment. We want to put local young people at the center of this journey through storytelling and community planning.
The Vision:
Moseley Road Baths are offering a paid development opportunity for six young people aged 18-30 in Balsall Heath to form a Steering Group.
The Steering Group will be invited to identify stories related to the Baths, Balsall Heath and young people today. They will be supported by the Moseley Road Baths team to lead creative decisions and decide how those stories are told with their chosen audiences and communities in mind.
Moseley Road Baths encourage the Steering Group to creatively explore and interrogate Moseley Road Baths’ history and heritage. To do so, they will be given the resources, agency and expert support, to create a digital (and potentially a physical) project that encourages a re-imagining and re-telling of the Baths journey to now.
About You:
We want the Steering Group to be representative of Balsall Heath and the people who live here.
This project is about telling the stories that are relevant to the young people in Balsall Heath and exploring Moseley Road Baths’ heritage in relation to the here and now. Our aim is to ensure that young people are represented and feel ownership of Moseley Road Baths’ and their own future by exploring the past and present.
We want the direction of the project to be guided and steered by the young people of Balsall Heath.
Steering Group roles are open to anyone who believes in the project’s vision, wants to support the project to be the best it can possibly be, and meets the following criteria:
- One: Lives within a 15-minute radius of Balsall Heath, this can be by bus, bike, walking.
- Two: Are aged 18-30
- Three: Have a desire to curate and tell the stories of Balsall Heath and Moseley Road Baths
- Four: Have a good understanding and lived experience of Balsall Heath
- Five: Want to work as part of a collaborative team
- Six: Someone who is curious!
This role does not require any formal qualifications or employment experience. You do not need to be a professional artist, curator, or storyteller! Your enthusiasm, experiences, and perspectives are enough.
This project is part of the Diving In program, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Practical Information (Terms and Conditions):
This is a paid role, the fee for the work is guaranteed at £1200 per person, based on 6 working days at £200 per day.
Steering Group members will work the equivalent to one day per month over the 6-month project, between June and November 2023.
Meetings will be arranged to a mutually agreed schedule; some Steering Group tasks may require working independently, which can be done to suit you around your own schedule.
