About Retrofit
Retrofit Balsall Heath is a community-led neighborhood project in the Balsall Heath area of Birmingham, UK. The project aims to ‘retrofit’ Victorian terraced houses in this lower-income inner-city neighborhood to improve energy efficiency, reduce heating bills, and address environmental concerns.

The key aspects of this project include:

  1. Community-Led: It is led by local residents and community organizations rather than being directed by the public sector.
  2. Participating Organizations: Several local organizations are involved in this initiative, such as IFEES (Islamic Foundation for Ecology & Environmental Sciences), The Sultan Bahu Trust, MECC Trust, Al-Abbas Islamic Centre, Balsall Heath Church Centre, Fruit & Nut Village, Zero Carbon House, BHIOP (Balsall Heath Is Our Planet), and Saheli Hub. These organizations bring their expertise and resources to the project.
  3. Goals: The project’s goals include improving the energy efficiency of housing, reducing the environmental impact of the community, and providing energy advice to vulnerable residents.
  4. Innovation:  Understand the unique features like the first solar church in Birmingham (Balsall Heath Church Centre) and the UK’s first certified zero-carbon retrofit home (Zero Carbon House) as part of the project.
  5. Diverse Initiatives: The project covers a wide range of activities, from ecology and environmental work to women-only cycling and well-being programs (Saheli Hub).

Retrofit Balsall Heath is an innovative, community-driven effort to make positive changes in an inner-city neighborhood, focusing on energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, and community well-being.
